For instance, Maeng Da and White Borneo are the most potent kratom strains. But even these strains differ in their interactions with the body, with Maeng Da known to offer more intense effects. However, you’d do yourself more justice to know that Maeng Da is more powerful than its White Borneo counterpart.

What Are The Bioactive Chemicals In Kratom?

The kratom tree produces scores of bioactive phytochemicals. These compounds are primarily made up of alkaloids, with the most popular ones being mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine.

Mitragynine is the more abundant of the two widespread alkaloids in kratom. This compound was first isolated in the early 1920s. It has a chemical formula of C23H30N2O4 and a molecular weight of 398.50 g/mol.

Mitragynine is insoluble in water. However, the compound dissolves in conventional organic solvents like alcohols, acetone, and chloroform. That explains why industrially-prepared kratom products usually come dissolved in organic solvents.

7-Hydroxymitragynine is less abundant than mitragynine. This alkaloid occurs in trace amounts in most kratom species.

7-Hydroxymitragynine was first identified in 1993. It has a molecular formula of C23H30N2O5 and a molecular weight of 414.50 g/mol.

Collectively, mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine account for the vast majority of kratom’s effects. That may include pain relief, treating anxiety, boosting energy levels, combating insomnia, etc.

Interestingly, the more abundant mitragynine also happens to be the lesser potent of the two alkaloids. But once consumed, mitragynine usually converts into 7-hydroxymitragynine, which is thought to be 13 times more potent than morphine.
